Welcome! Today I’ll be showing you how to draw Appa from Avatar The Last Airbender. Appa is the last of the sky bison, and is the faithful companion to Aang. He also happens to be one of the cutest characters to ever be included in an anime. So get your pencils ready and let’s learn how to draw Appa!
To get Appa started we will first need to draw three overlapping circles as shown in the image. These circles will form Appa’s head and body.
In the smallest circle, draw Appa’s oval shaped nose with a curved line inside of it for his nostrils.
Next, draw the outline of Appa’s lower jaw, and tuft of fur on each side of his nose.
Draw a jagged line along the bottom edge of the circle of his head to form some shaggy fur covering his eyes.
Now erase all your overlapping lines and draw Appa’s two upward curved horns sticking out from the top of his head.
Appa is sort of shaped like the Catbus from Totoro, and he has more legs than your normal Bison— six legs, to be exact! Draw the outline of each of Appa’s legs as shown in the image.
Draw three large toes at the end of each of Appa’s legs.
Next we will draw Appa’s large, flat tail, and a few lines underneath his body to form what looks like scales.
Just like Aang, we need to give Appa his famous arrow pattern on his head and the top of his body.
All that’s left to do now is give Appa a little color. He is fairly dull in color. Just a light beige on top, and a gray color for his underside and horns.
I hope you enjoyed learning how to draw Appa with me. If you did, be sure to share this tutorial on social media and stop back for plenty more! Happy drawing!
