How To Draw An Owl

Today we will be learning how to draw an owl. I have actually had this tutorial sitting at my desk for a while, buried under some other things. But, today’s the day! If you follow us at Draw Central, you might remember that I did a tutorial on how to draw a bird, which gives a basic outline. This will expand on that tutorial, to be more specific for owls.

Let’s get started.

What you’ll need:

To start our drawing, we will first need to draw a large oval, with a smaller circle on top. These will be the body and head of our owl.

Draw another half oval sticking out just a little from the bottom of the owl’s body. This will be the owl’s wing, which we will build onto in a bit.

Give your owl something to stand on. This could be a rock, the ground, or just a simple branch like I did.

Draw your owl’s large legs, and claws gripping the branch. Unlike most birds that have skinny legs, owls have short wide legs that are covered in a thick layer of feathers.

Now we are going to expand on the owl’s face a little. Give him a couple very large eyes. Owls actually have some of the largest eyes of any bird.

Draw a small jagged line that separates the head from the body. Owls don’t really have a neck, so this line of feathers will visually divide the head from everything else.

Give your owl a very small hooked beak, and the face is nearly complete.

Building on the outline of the owls wing from earlier, draw in several feathers. These feathers should get longer and thinner as they move out toward the end of the wing.

Draw your owl’s very short tail, sticking out just a little bit from behind its wing.

Give your owl its feathery looking “horns”, and some feathers around the eyes, and we are almost done.

All that’s left to do now is to add a little more feather detail to the rest of the owl’s body. As you can see in the image on the left, I drew in some feathers around the underside of the owl’s body, and sparsely around the face.

That’s all folks! I hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial on how to draw an owl. Don’t forget to comment and like us on Facebook.

Thanks everyone!
